Terminal, Cashier, POS Operator and Shift explained
These terms describe different parts of a register operation. Keeping them separate makes accountability clearer.
Key concepts
- Terminal
- The business workstation or device context used for POS; it is not a person.
- POS Operator
- A staff user who can unlock a terminal with their own PIN.
- Cashier
- The person accountable for the register shift.
- Shift
- The cash-accountability session, from opening float to close.
- Business Day
- The warehouse/date reconciliation boundary; it does not replace shift-level cash custody.
